Winter Theme discourages new players

So just a few days ago I discovered ARK in the steam store on sale. I watched a few videos, thought it looked fun, and decided to try it out. Excited about the concept, I told my brother about it and he too decided that he wanted to buy it as it looked fun. Today was our first chance to play together. We spawned into the snowy world to find warning messages, "Find some warmth, you are freezing!" Quickly we scrambled to collect resources, and in the process leveled up and used our points to learn how to make a camp fire. At this point our hunger was down to starving, so we quickly tried to collect berries while staying near the fire. This technique helped us barely survive but then night fell. We leveled up again and put points towards a cloth shirt and pants. With all the fiber from the berry collecting, we had enough to make shirts and pants. We equipped them only to find that we were still freezing. We then scrambled to make torches trying to get even a little more warmth. Once we each had torches, pants and shirts, and a fire going, we were still freezing to death! We died multiple times due to cold and hunger even after this initial time. At one point, it was even day time and we still died due to freezing with torches, a fire, and clothes!!! After about 2 hours of this we both have given up after deciding that it isn't fun. I guess we will just have to wait another week or more so that the event ends and we can play the game.....
