Transferring characters

So im relatively new, if i wanted to play on my friends non-dedicated server can i use the same character that i've been using in my own single player? also if i join his world will this destroy my own and lose my own progress? any feedback would be great!

I don't know about your character carrying over to their game, but you won't lose any of your progress. I think when they have a non-dedicated server it basically loads the single player game of whoever the host is and just allows a few friends to join. Your game will still be saved when you go back to it though (as far as I know).
