Resources not respawning

Me and my friends are playing a non-dedicated server and we are having trouble keeping up with out metal production. The main problem is that we find areas that contain metal and we collect all we can get our hands on. But then we wait several in game days and the resources never regenerate. Does anyone know anything about this? We do not have any structures around the areas so I do not think that is the problem.
